Food & Beverage

To provide safe and nutritious food to a growing population and to meet rising demand for meat, fish and dairy, is a difficult yet fundamental challenge. Currently, the food system has a huge environmental footprint and it faces some of the biggest challenges of all sectors and throughout its entire value chain in. Food production accounts for one half of the planet’s habitable land, is the biggest cause of land-use change and deforestation, comprises 70% of global water use, accounts for a quarter of GHG emissions, and is responsible for significant amounts of biodiversity loss.

Managing demand of food and beverages across the globe to develop a system that is safe, sustainable and healthy will be an essential component of reaching climate targets. From a consumption perspective, this means changing behaviour to enforce sustainable diets based on low-carbon, local and seasonal produce, while limiting channels for waste in retail, service and at household level.
