Natural Resources

Although, raw materials form the foundation of every physical thing on the planet, the current system of production and consumption based on extraction of raw materials is depleting natural resources faster than they can be regenerated. The problem intensifies as global population reaches newer heights - alongside rising incomes - the demand for goods are set to continue to increase alongside the raw materials required to produce them. This has and will augment the irrevocable environmental fallout, with the sacrifice for mineral resources growing deeper into the future.

Raw materials will be essential in the transition to low-carbon economies and it is crucial that they are managed in a way that is sustainable (e.g. to incorporate re-use and recycling). Recycling rates need to increase and fundamentally, the design of products needs to consider material recuperation so that less virgin resources are required.
