Textile

The fast production, fast consumption and fast disposal of inexpensive clothing means that the textiles sector has become a persistent exacerbator of environmental degradation. Most significantly the textiles industry majorly contributes to vast consumption of freshwater, water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and the release in harmful microfibres into water streams.

Embracing sustainability in fashion is an issue for the entire value chain - from the sourcing of materials, to upstream activities involved in the manufacturing and distribution of garments. From the consumption end, demand needs to steer away from quick trends and single use items, to garments that are made with sustainable materials through low-energy manufacturing  processes. In end-use, a greater emphasis will need to be placed on circularity; specifically, material recycling and second-hand markets to keep materials and products in the value chain.
